Cellular Base Station Imaging for UAV Detection

As the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is greatly increasing, there an emerging threat using UAVs in infrastructure/cyber-attacks and data-eavesdropping. From safety security perspective, it a timely need to build air surveillance system that enables seamless detection function for low-and-middle altitude flying targets. However, unrealistic widely deploy classical radar stations due astronomical cost. Rethinking role cellular mobile communication networks, we desire add “vision-like” capability deployed outdoor base (BSs) realize joint imaging (JIAC) simultaneously through sharing existing infrastructure spectrum. In this work, first time systematically study demonstrate concept station UAV detection, which allows BS work like inverse synthetic-aperture (ISAR) besides communication. Firstly, provide JIAC transmission signalling systematic operation mechanism. Secondly, feasibility investigated analysed support idea imaging. Finally, numerical simulation evaluates performance three typical types BSs operating at 900 MHz, 3.5 GHz 28 GHz, respectively, implies works detection! Furthermore, function, as new by-product, requires only very little change current orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has nearly no influence on performance.
